Brunswick School making preparations for annual Telemiracle carnival

Feb 11, 2020 | 4:21 PM

Brunswick school staff members in Melfort are doing their part to raise funds for Telemiracle 44.

The school will host its annual Telemiracle Carnival on Feb. 27 and staff members are looking to the families within the school for donations beforehand.

The carnival is put on by the Grade 6 students each year according to organizer Heather Thompson.

“It’s an event that the Grade 6 [students] look forward to putting on by the time they get to Grade 6 because they have taken part each year as a participant and then they get to run the show,” Thompson said.

Each class within the school gets the chance to take part in the carnival throughout the school day.

“At the end of the day, the kids always talk about how tired they are but also how much fun they had putting it on and it’s interesting for them to see the other side of it,” Thompson said. “They get to run it and see what it takes to put it on and they are pretty proud of their work.”

Typically, the event brings in between $2,000 and $3,000 so Thompson said they are looking to surpass that $3,000 mark.

Thompson said the carnival has been happening for 15 years or more and they love keeping up the tradition that helps such a great cause in Saskatchewan.

“The money we raise always goes to Telemiracle and Kinsmen. We also benefitted here at our school because for our fully accessible playground, we got some grant money from the Kinsmen to be able put that playground in,” Thompson said.

In order to make the carnival a success, donations to be used as prizes are needed which have been a little bit lower this year than in years previous at this point.

Families are asked to bring in donations of gently used toys, books, games, and puzzles that would be suitable for elementary students by Friday, February 14 at the school office.

There will also be a raffle table at the carnival with new items as well.
