ENGAGING URBAN ABORIGINAL PEOPLE IN NORTH BATTLEFORD

The Coalition of Aboriginal Peoples of Saskatchewan (CAPS) President, John Hanikenne, says there is little doubt that self-government for urban Indigenous peoples will improve conditions challenging Aboriginal city-dwellers.

The rapid growth of the urban Indigenous population in Saskatchewan is a significant policy factor and presents an urgent challenge for municipal-Aboriginal relations.

“Only by adopting a positive and holistic approach based on our culture and traditions will meaningful and transformative change take place,” said President Hanikenne.

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, the Coalition of Aboriginal Peoples of Saskatchewan will be hosting an outreach and engagement session from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at the Battleford Indian & Métis Friendship Centre located at 960 103 Street in North Battleford.

CAPS has recently held outreach and engagement meetings in Regina, Prince Albert and Saskatoon. Urban Aboriginal issues are a high priority for federal and many provincial jurisdictions, but Aboriginal inclusion in municipal decision-making remains weak.
