Warming up

Warmer weather moving through northeast

Feb 13, 2020 | 3:04 PM

A brief cold snap is giving way to some milder weather.

The region saw wind chills dip below – 40 Celsius overnight Tuesday and Wednesday, but the frigid temperatures are leaving the province.

“We have a fairly significant weather system moving through northern Saskatchewan,” Terri Lang of Environment and Climate Change told northeastNOW.

Lang said system is “sucking up” the wind from the South, bringing with it milder air, and the high pressure ridge is heading out of Saskatchewan to the southeast.

Temperatures will warm up gradually today, and will continue to increase overnight. Daytime highs are expected to be above normal for Valentine’s Day, but things will cool off again this weekend before settling into near normal temperatures next week.

Despite the cool conditions over the past few days, she said there were no cold temperature records set in the province.

“We saw high wind chill values, but that doesn’t change the temperature,” Lang said. Melfort reached a low of -34.4 C overnight.

The rapid temperature changes are an indication the sun is higher in the sky, according to Lang. She said the jet stream starts to meander a little more, and while spring isn’t imminent, those temperature changes tend to happen as spring approaches.

The incoming system is bringing heavy snow into northern Saskatchewan, and Lang recommends checking the Highway Hotline before travelling to northern communities tonight into tomorrow.
