Mustangs blow out Millionaires 7-1

Feb 16, 2020 | 8:26 AM

Heading into their home game against the Melville Millionaires on Saturday, the Melfort Mustangs attempted to not look at the standings.

With eight games left in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League’s (SJHL) regular season, the Mustangs didn’t have many more opportunities to climb up the standings and secure home ice in the first round of the post-season.

The Mustangs didn’t look past the SJHL’s last-place team in the Millionaires, blowing them out at Northern Lights Palace 7-1.

“We treated this like any other game and got a positive result,” Mustangs Forward Ben Tkachuk said. “It was huge for us. We got to jump up in our division… we’re going to keep going from here.”

Tkachuk’s goal early in the second – a wrist shot blocker side – was the Mustangs’ first of three in a span of 1:35, giving Melfort a 5-1 lead. He admitted there are challenges playing with a substantial lead while there’s nearly two full periods of hockey left to play.

“Teams like that can come back pretty quick,” Tkachuk said. “It’s a snap of the finger and they’re back in the game. We’ve got to keep putting pressure on.”
