Conference in Melfort to focus on MMIWG

The Marguerite Riel Centre and Cumberland College are partnering to host a conference on missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG).

The ‘Living Beyond’ conference will be held March 10 at the Kerry Vickar Centre in Melfort.

Harley Delorme is a resolution and health support worker at the Marguerite Riel Centre. He said several speakers will be featured at the event.

“It’s a one-day conference, with the keynote speaker Jamie Black, and then we also have two speakers in the afternoon, Gwenda Yuzicappi and Kristy Shaw, who are going to share their stories,” Delorme told northeastNOW.

Black’s Red Dress Project focuses on missing and murdered women across the country, with displays of red dresses that represent the number of missing Indigenous women.

Yuzicappi spent almost three years looking for her missing daughter who was sadly found murdered.

Shaw went through addiction issues and a difficult upbringing, and is determined to help others facing similar experiences.

Delorme said hosting events like these helps shed light on the MMIWG issue.

“It’s very important because there’s still a problem today with a lot of missing women, girls, and even men, so it’s very important to keep the word out there,” Delorme said.

He said people go missing worldwide, and it’s important that people keep their eyes open and watch out for each other.
