A couple of local teams took the gold medals at the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association (SHSAA) provincial curling championships on the weekend.

The Foam Lake Panthers edged Swift Current 6-5 in the championship game to claim first place on the boys side, avenging a 7-4 defeat in the round robin.

Foam Lake curling coach Debbie Fedak told northeastNOW everyone was overjoyed with the victory.

“This was the first gold medal in curling for our school for the boys,” Fedak said. “The last time somebody from our team won was in girls high school curling in 1973, so it’s a pretty big win.”

Fedak said they thought they should be in the hunt heading into the weekend event.

“We weren’t sure that we would get gold but we thought we would be getting a medal of some kind,” Fedak said.

She said the dedication and hard work of the team helped make them successful.

“They showed up to practice, they always gave it 100 per cent,” Fedak said. “They had some excellent teams to compete against to get them ready for the final games.”

On the girls side, the Wadena Blue Devils dumped Yorkton Regional 8-1 in the final to earn the gold medal.

Wadena was undefeated at provincials, beating Allan 8-2, Wawota 7-4, and Assiniboia 7-5 in the round robin.

The Blue Devils downed Nipawin LP Miller 8-3 in the championship bracket to advance to the final.

Nipawin finished fourth, losing 5-3 to Wawota in the third place playoff.
