NESD discusses sanctions

North East School Division outlines effects of teachers’ sanctions

The North East School Division made some adjustments in light of Monday’s announcement by the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation (STF).

The organization announced teachers would begin withholding services on Thursday, March 12. That includes withdrawal of voluntary and extracurricular activities.

Teachers will not be providing supervision until 15 minutes before the start of school, and 15 minutes after school.

“We’re asking that parents ensure that students not be arriving at school before 15 minutes before the day, and that arrangements are made that students are able to leave for home within 15 minutes of the end of the day,” North East School Division Director of Education Don Rempel told northeastNOW.

Student-led conferences, which will take place Wednesday and Thursday night this week, are continuing as scheduled. Rempel said some activities planned within the instructional day that are curricular-related will also continue.

He said if parents are unsure about school trips and field trips that scheduled during the school day, they should contact the individual schools.

Because of withdrawn services for voluntary activities, including extra-curricular activities and clubs, Rempel said “the North East School Division has taken the position to cancel all out-of-school activities just to ensure student safety, because we want to have predictability about what supports are in place to support students.”

Sporting activities and groups organized outside of the instructional day are also cancelled until further notice.

The Horizon School Division issued a similar notice to inform parents of the teachers’ sanctions, and the fallout from the sanctions.

Teachers voted 90.2 per cent in favour of job sanctions during a two-day vote last month.
