Students in health field to tour community of Tisdale

Highlighting the community of Tisdale and health care in the region.

A rural skills tour is taking place Saturday in the community.

Tisdale Union Hospital facility administrator, acute care Tracy Farber told northeastNOW they partner with Sask Health Careers to put on the event.

“We have about 40 students coming up from Saskatoon,” Farber said. “The students range from nursing, practical nursing, pre-med, OT, physio, CCA’s, lab and diagnostic.”

The hospital will be showcased in the morning, while the town of Tisdale will be highlighted in the afternoon.

Farber said the experience can be an eye-opener for students.

“There is a perception that rural nursing, rural medicine may not be as exciting as in urban centres, but the opposite is true,” Farber said. “We kind of have to be jack of all trades, and we never know what’s coming through the door.”

The tour is held largely in an effort to recruit more health professionals to the area. Farber said that’s why they wanted to highlight the town of Tisdale and some of the amenities they have. Students will be taken bowling and curling during Saturday’s tour.

“We’re excited to have everyone here, we do have a representative from the town that will also be touring with them, and really this is in hopes of recruitment and we certainly hope we can get some students to come here when they [have] graduated,” Farber said.

A similar tour was held in Melfort last month.
