Melfort closing city facilities

All City of Melfort facilities are now closed to the public

The City of Melfort is following the lead of many organizations amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

They have announced the closure of all City of Melfort facilities, effective immediately.

“It’s an unprecedented decision for the city to close our facilities to the public, but we’re acting on the best advice from health [officials] in regards of trying to prevent the spread of this virus, and practicing social distancing” Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW.

Affected facilities include:
• City hall – Closed to the public. Staff will answer calls and emails at 306-752-5911 or city@melfort.ca . Payments can be made by mail, through the drop box at City Hall, or online banking.
• Northern Lights Palace Pool and Arena – Scheduled programing and swimming lessons cancelled.
• Kerry Vickar Center – All bookings and programing cancelled.
• Melfort Wapiti Library – Closed to the public.
• Melfort and District Museum – Closed to the public.
• Historic Post Office – All bookings cancelled.
• Melfort Landfill – Closed to the public. Regularly scheduled street side waste collection will continue.
• Handi Van – Services limited to essential transportation only.

Lutz said interactions between the public and staff members increases the possibility of transmission, so they will continue to operate but all facilities will be closed to the public.

“We do want the public to know that city staff remain at work and we will continue to maintain essential services,” Lutz said. “In addition, although the landfill itself is closed to the public, the regular scheduled street-side pickup will continue.”
