Facilities and town office close in Naicam due to coronavirus concerns

Mar 18, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The Town of Naicam has come out with their list of closures during the COVID-19 outbreak.

All Recreation facilities and events have been cancelled, and the town office will be closed to the public. Town office staff will still be on hand to yield questions and concerns especially for the older residents and folks that may be newer to the area.

Mayor Rodger Hayward said as is the case with most other communities, emergency services are still functioning.

“Our ambulance staff is working with the health authority on following all of their protocols,” Hayward said. “Not much has changed with fire, we will assist where we need and use them for whatever our citizens needs and anyone travelling through Naicam as well.”

Council decided at their emergency meeting that they will be waiving interest that would have normally been generated on April and May 1st on all past due accounts for taxes and utilities.

“We thought we would step up for those that may be self-isolating or are unexpectedly unemployed just to give them a break as much as we can.” Hayward said. “It may not seem like much but it might help some people.”

Council is planning to keep with their regular meeting next Tuesday with members strictly instructed to stay home if they are not feeling well. The agenda is expected to be quite light though for that meeting.

“We are just going with the lead of other towns and city’s in the province are doing and just want to do our part in trying to slow the spread of COVID-19 and keeping our residents safe,“ Hayward said.

The Naicam thrift store, library, and seniors centre are all closed for the time being. The Churchview Lodge is asking that any visitors not attend if they are feeling ill or have been outside of Canada in the last 14 days.

Naicam is a community of around 660 people and is located 50 km south of Melfort on Highway 6.
