City of Melfort issues call for supplies to assist health care providers

The City of Melfort is helping out local health care providers during the COVID-19 pandemic should a shortage of supplies occur.

The city put out a call for supplies to local businesses on Monday, March 23 to see if they had some extra equipment in their inventory to spare. This comes as the Family Physicians Group and the Melfort Hospital Staff asked the city to assist them in finding some more supplies.

“We have stepped up to offer some assistance in trying to gather what might be available locally,” said Melfort’s Director of Development Planning, and Community Relations Brent Lutz. “[That’s] should a shortage occur.”

Equipment being ask for include masks, full face shields, bunny suits, and goggles.

“These are basic safety items that are used in many industries,” Lutz said. “And so if there are any businesses that utilize these, and keep a quantity of these available and on hand, we’d certainly like them to reach out to the city and let us know.”

Those businesses that may have stock are asked to contact City Hall at 306-752-5911 or contact the Facilities Manager Leonard Whitney at facilitymanager@melfort.ca.

While there’s no word on if more protective equipment for health care providers is on the way through the normal channels, Lutz said this initiative is helping to prepare in advance.

“I think there’s just some expectation that demand is going to be higher than average,” he said. “And that could delay the arrival of some of these products, and some of them may already be here in our community that we could make use of.”

The city said they are able to organize a doorstep pickup if needed so they can be delivered to the hospital.
