Humboldt mayor discusses city’s first COVID-19 case

The mayor of Humboldt is encouraging people to stay calm, follow health protocols, and strict social distancing. His comments came after the community’s first confirmed case of COVID-19 over the weekend.

The case was reported on Sunday, and the individual affected has self-isolated.

“It’s one of those things where you hope it doesn’t happen, but I don’t think anybody is immune to this, so any community is going to eventually have it,” Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench told northeastNOW.

Muench said the city has encouraged social distancing and self-isolation, and that’s even more important now there is a local case of COVID-19.

“When people do things like go for groceries or out to the post office, they really need to keep those types of things in mind,” Muench said. “If you’re going to work, go straight there and straight back, and don’t spend a bunch of time out and about if you don’t have to.”

Muench is working from home, which he says keeps him close to City Hall. He said administration and council have been in regular communication.

City Hall is closed in Humboldt, and Mayor Muench said staff is working from home if possible.

Muench said the precautions and protocols the city put in place were especially important, in light of the positive COVID-19 case in the community.

“We need to do that beforehand because those precautions are developed to prevent the spread, and as cases start appearing, that’s exactly why those measures are in place,” Muench said.

He asked people to try to stay as calm as possible, and to practice safe measures.

“If people can keep that in mind and stay home if you can and just work together as a community, we’re all in this together and we really need to cooperate and help each other out where possible,” Muench said.
