Carrot River By-Election

Carrot River’s mayoral by-election postponed to May

Apr 6, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The advanced poll for Carrot River’s mayoral by-election on March 13 saw 33 votes casted, although the rest of the town will need to wait at least another month before electing its next mayor.

Kevin Trew, Carrot River’s town administrator who’s acting as the returning officer, officially postponed the mayoral by-election to Friday, May 8. It was originally set to take place on March 25.

“Homebound voting has been suspended for this by-election due to the risk surrounding COVID-19,” Trew said.

The by-election comes after former mayor Bob Gagne resigned on Nov. 14, 2019. Councillor Ila Boehm was appointed as acting mayor on Nov. 20, with her term lasting until the by-election. The winner of the by-election would serve as Carrot River’s mayor until the 2020 Saskatchewan municipal elections on Nov. 9, 2020.

“While there is no way to know at this time whether the new date selected will be a date where voters will be able to cast their ballot without the risk of transfer of COVID-19, the selection of May 8 fits within the 60 days of postponement… and allows for the sitting mayor to have a term of over six months prior to the next general election,” Trew stated.

Acting Mayor Ila Boehm and Brock Irvine, a park maintenance worker at Pasquia Regional Park, will be the town’s two nominees in a mayoral by-election.

Trew told northeastNOW another postponement is possible if it’s not safe for Carrot River residents to vote on May 8. However, he said the town will seek the Ministry of Government Relations’ advice regarding the sense of hosting a by-election in that case.
