NEOSS postpones Walk a Mile in Her Shoes until fall

Another local event has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) has announced their annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes fundraiser will not be taking place May 26 as originally scheduled.

“We will be postponing our Walk a Mile in May to see what happens, possibly run it in the fall,” Executive Director Louise Schweitzer told northeastNOW.

The fundraiser features men wearing red high heels and walking a mile to show their support in the battle against domestic, sexualized, and gender violence.

All money raised at Walk a Mile goes toward NEOSS programming, and last year’s event brought in over $17,000.

Schweitzer said the decision to postpone the event was to ensure social and physical distancing protocols were followed.

“It’s very important that we, as organizations that are looking to our communities for support, recognize the safety and well-being of our communities above all else,” Schweitzer said.

The decision was with the safety of those communities, and the individuals involved in the walk, as the top priority.

She said Walk a Mile is a fun time for the whole family, and also serves as an important opportunity to raise awareness as it comes to domestic and other forms of violence.

The walk was slated to take place at Tisdale’s Town Square as it was last year, but Schweitzer said the decision on where this fall’s event will be held has yet to be finalized.

Schweitzer said some NEOSS staff members have also floated the possibility of a ‘virtual walk’, and there may be upcoming notices on that.
