R.M. of Torch Rivers asks residents to keep recyclable materials at home if possible

Apr 17, 2020 | 5:22 PM

The Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Torch River will be without recycling services for the foreseeable future.

A public notice from the R.M. stated recycling products are unable to move across the Canada-U.S. border. R.M. of Torch River Administrator David Yorke said their recycling provider began storing material indoors.

“They ran out of inside storage,” Yorke said. “With the potential for contamination due to mold or rodents, they wouldn’t be able to store anything outside. Things would have to get moved to our landfill facilities rather than being kept for recycling.”

Because the R.M. would rather not see recyclable materials end up at the Garrick Landfill, Yorke said the request to residents is to store their materials at home if possible. The materials would need to be stored somewhere to keep it from being exposed to moisture and rodents.

“Once we’re back to normal, we can move the material back into the recycling program,” he said. “If people don’t have that option, they can continue using recycling facilities around the R.M. and town. In the short term, we’ll be dealing with [recycling material] at our landfill.”

Yorke said there’s no other short-term option available and the recycling provider has no estimated date for when they can store or ship materials.
