The Melfort Fire Department responded to a grass fire in the RM of Star City on Thursday, April 30.

It took crews eight and a half hours to eliminate the blaze after responding shortly before 5 p.m.

The fire had made it’s way into some thick bush near a yard site, but crews were able to use back burning to fight the fire on top of 10,000 gallons of water.

Fire Chief Shaun Stewart said no structures were involved in that blaze. It was about 18,000 square metres in size.

The Melfort Fire Department also responded to a yard fire just before 9 p.m. on Thursday and needed 3,000 gallons of water to extinguish the fire.

Crews were able to cut the fire off from anything of value in the yard.

Both fires began as smoldering fires that got whipped up by the wind that came later in the day. Stewart added the land owners didn’t have an extinguishing source if the fire got out of hand.
