A Melfort Mustangs graduate has chosen to go south of the border for post-secondary hockey.

Forward Austin Nault has committed to St. Thomas University in the NCAA Division III ranks. Nault said he had a few options for schools ot go to for the 2020/2021 season.

“They got a great academic program, I’m looking to go into business, so they’ve got a good program for that,” he said. “And then their hockey team has been good over the past few years, so it was just the right decision for me.”

In conversations with the coaches, Nault said it sounds like there’s an opportunity to play right away and help the team win.

“Hoping to get in there to contribute to the team right away, play some good minutes,” Nault said. “Put the puck in the net like I’m used to.”

After two-and-a-half seasons with the Kindersley Klippers, Nault was traded to the Mustangs in November as Melfort was looking to add for a playoff run. In 145 regular season and playoff games for the Klippers, Nault scored 46 goals and added 48 assists for 94 points. The Winnipeg, Man. product was well on his way to another productive year in Kindersley before a wrist injury took him out of the lineup for a while.

“Pretty tough injury, missed about three months of the season,” Nault said. “Glad I could still finish it out and get going to a good school.”

Nault finally made his Melfort Mustangs debut on Jan. 25, against the Kindersley Klippers. He scored in that game, and ultimately recorded a point in each of his first four games with the Mustangs. He said it was coming to Melfort that really helped in committing to the NCAA.

“Definitely [was] excited to come to a winning team, wasn’t able to play right away because of the injury,” Nault said. “But I would definitely say Melfort helped me a lot in the process of picking a school.”

Nault ended up with four goals and six assists for 10 points in his 12 regular season games with the Mustangs. He then tallied two assists in four playoff games before the season came to a stop.

St. Thomas University is based in St. Paul, Minnesota and Nault said he is likely to take something business related while there.
