Trojans announce 10 signings for 2020/2021 roster

The roster for the 2020-2021 Tisdale Trojans is taking shape as the team has announced a number of signings.

When a U18 AAA team “signs” a player, that means they have a spot on that team for the coming season, if they don’t make their Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) or Western Hockey League (WHL) clubs.

On Friday, May 1, the Trojans announced 10 players that would be set to join the club for the coming season. Head Coach Dennis Kubat said he and the scouting staff looked at a number of different things when it came to recruiting these players.

“Hockey IQ, mindset for development – which is just a desire to learn and be coached- and just overall compete, were a few of the main things that as a group we looked at with our players,” Kubat told northeastNOW.

Of the 10 new recruits for the Trojans, three played full time in the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League in 2019-2020.

The seven forwards added by Kubat and staff add to an already solid forward group that could feature as many as five returnees from the 2019/2020 team.

“I think if you look at those 12, there’s a lot of depth,” he said. “And I think depth can really be successful in this league.”

Kubat added the defence group is very experienced with possibly three returnees, and Kody Norberg, giving the Trojans four defencemen with U18 AAA experience, and then Cole Barry who played U18 AA last season. Kubat said they are still looking for another player on the blue line, but they like what’s there now.

Only one of the Trojans new recruits is born in 2005, meaning it’ll be a much older group this season for Tisdale, something the staff wanted to do.

“We kind of had a younger team last year, and told the boys that we were going to go old the next year and really hopefully battle for that top spot in the league,” Kubat said. “Not saying a young team can’t do that by any means, but that was just our mindset as a group going into recruiting.”

Kubat added that with the unique circumstances the sports world is in these days, it was a bit different when it came to scouting and recruiting. He said without a normal spring camp, they had to rely on their scouts more. Kubat said it’s going to be an interesting year, as some of their players will compete for spots in the SJHL or WHL, and the new additions of Estevan and Warman into the league, along with the subtractions of the Notre Dame Argos and Beardy’s Blackhawks.

“We’ll be an older team, but there will be a lot of young 15-year-olds in the league,” he said. “So, it’ll be interesting. Obviously, we want our guys to play at the best level possible, but selfishly you want to try and get most of them back as the depth after your core. I think it’ll be questionable this year as there’s just so many spots available for teams and they’ll have other guys signed.”

If any of the currently signed players on any team’s roster does end up making their respective Junior teams, their U18 AAA team would be able to free up another spot to sign another player to fill out their roster.
