Melfort Youth Evolution hosting wellness educator for online mental health session

In celebration of national mental health week, the Melfort Youth Evolution (MYE) will host a zoom connect call on “staying chill on the inside.”

Wellness Educator Laura Lawrence of MindBody Balance Therapies will provide self-care tips on how to cope during isolation.

Lawrence told northeastNOW she will also be joined by Alexis Epp who has worked on the mental wellness 20/30 distance learning course offered by the province.

“She will share some things with us too so this really will be just a great opportunity for youth to hop on board for some extra support,” Lawrence said.

The call will be all about asking youth about their challenges during these different and trying times with having to be at home and not being able to get together with friends.

“They are struggling and just like adults they are feeling the whole spectrum of emotions and trying to find a new normal is more challenging because they are still developing healthy coping mechanisms to work through it,” Lawrence said.

Lawrence will go over some things they can do during their new routines to help ease the overwhelm.

MindBody Balance Therapies has hosted other youth sessions in the region before the COVID-19 pandemic all in which were well attended according to Lawrence.

“To quote Premier Scott Moe, ‘it’s never been more important to get real and stay connected,’ which is basically what we have been saying since COVID-19 came along,” Carswell said. “Just because we have to be socially distanced we need to stay connected and it’s especially so important for the youth.”

Carswell added there are a few things that youth have been able to do to keep themselves occupied while in isolation but this was one idea brought forward that they felt was prevalent especially in the midst of national mental health week. It is also national youth week.

“All youth 12 to 24 are all invited, the more the merrier,” Carswell said.

The Saskatchewan division of the Canadian Mental Health Association also offers great resources to help with mental wellness such as articles, videos, and interviews.

Lawrence also runs a calm, and connected kids’ collection for parents to do with their kids. She also runs an online rest and release class on Sunday nights.

“I think we can all agree that it’s been a challenge and that’s an understatement, I feel,” Lawrence said.
