Bicycle Safety Week puts focus on safe riding

May 10, 2020 | 10:00 AM

Sunday, May 10 marks the start of Bicycle Safety Week.

This year’s theme is ‘Ready to Ride’, which brings awareness of safe cycling and injury prevention across the province.

Melfort Ambulance Manager Wayne Therres told northeastNOW that cycling is one of the most popular outdoor activities in Canada, and it’s the most popular for youth across the country.

But the popularity can come with a downside, if safety isn’t a priority.

“In Saskatchewan, it remains a leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations for children and youth,” Therres said. Over 100 Canadians die each year from bike-related injuries.

Therres said the goal is to spread information and awareness about bicycle safety. Wearing a properly-fitted bike helmet is the first step in improving safety, Therres said. He added it’s also vital to practice safe biking by learning the rules of the road.

“We need to share the road with vehicles, so we need to know the hand signals to properly let the vehicles around us know what we want to do, and we want to pay attention to what’s going on in the picture,” Therres said.

Former safety recommendations included riding single-file. Therres said with COVID-19, it’s now suggested you ride side-by-side while maintaining a six feet distance between riders.

Bicycle maintenance is also important, Therres said, similar to properly preparing vehicles before winter hits. He said you should make sure your bike chain is well-oiled, the wheels are on securely, the brakes are in proper working order, and the reflectors are in place.

Therres said people that wear backpacks while riding bicycles should make sure they aren’t over 25 lbs.
