Planting season underway; garden plots available at Community Garden

With gardening season underway, Melfort’s community garden has been a busy place over the last few days.

There are seven of the 30 plots at Spruce Haven Park still available.

Shannon Marshall with Communities in Bloom said this is something people can do while adhering to the current public health guidelines.

“Our garden beds are spread far enough part that keeping physical distance will be easy so no issues there,” Marshall said. “Any extra garden rules that we have for the season will be posted and it will be great gardening season.”

The plots have been tilled and water is available on site.

“It’s such a great way to grow your own food and have a sustainable food source for yourself or your family,” Marshall said. “There is just nothing better than fresh garden produce.”

Contact Myra at 306-921-7058 or Peggy at 306-921-8955, to reserve a plot for $30 to $40 depending on size.

In the midst of a pandemic, ensuring food sources has been at the forefront for many people according to Marshall.

“Greenhouses have been saying that they have never sold so much produce and seed starters than they have this year so I think there is a big demand to have that sustainable food source this year,” Marshall said.

Food Banks have also seen an increase in food demand and would be open to donations of fresh produce should there be an excess of food planted and grown.

“Not everyone has a garden plot or the means to make one and these ones are already to go, simply plant your seeds and get growing,” she said.
