Groundbreaking held for Wynyard skate park

The Town of Wynyard is just weeks away from getting their very own skate park.

On Monday, May 25 a groundbreaking was held at Lions Park to signify the start of construction for the project.

“We are very excited and very proud of the fundraising committee,” Wynyard’s Director of Leisure Services Sigourney Anderson said. “They were a completely independent group that decided that our community needed skate park.”

The project’s cost is around $200,000 according to Anderson and it’s expected to take about two weeks. She said a large portion of the skate park is pre-fabricated, making things move along a little bit quicker.

“It has a few unique aspects to it,” she said. “That I think our skateboarders, our scooter users, bike users are really going to like.”

The entire cost of the project was covered by fundraisers including a local 50/50. The winner of the draw will be announced on June 2. There were also some provincial and federal grants given to the committee, as well as some big donors chipping in.

Construction began shortly after the groundbreaking, and crews are mapping out the skate park as their first step.

While it is only expected to take a couple of weeks, Anderson wants to remind everyone that even when it is completed, the park won’t be open due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“That’s the only downside of it. We just have to think long-term,” Anderson told northeastNOW. “Once this is over, it’s going to be a structure that is low maintenance and it’s going to be in place and used for many many years.”
