Carrot River preparing for up to 150 vehicles during drive-in movie in June

The Saturday before Father’s Day is traditionally the Town of Carrot River’s Family Festival.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Family Festival, like other events in Carrot River such as the Winter Festival, award galas, and even a launch party for Rebellion Brewing’s Outback Hemp Beer were cancelled.

In place of the Family Festival, Carrot River will host a drive-in theatre night on Saturday, June 20.

“For a lot of families and people, [the Family Festival] is kind of a kickoff to summer,” Carrot River community development manager Miranda Blaber said. “It’s an opportunity for people to come out and be together as a community. With the current state of things, we were starting to feel people are needing to be a part of community and have something to look forward to; a way they can come together safely and enjoy something within the rules where everyone’s health and safety is protected.”

The town has hired Fresh Air Cinema to put up a screen and projector outside of Carrot River’s community centre and curling club. After conducting measurements, Blaber said they anticipate up to 150 vehicles being able to safely follow the province’s health guidelines within the two combined parking lots.

“There’s no charge thanks to sponsorship and the (town’s) community promotions department, but we still require people to pick up car passes so we can manage people coming in and out of the lot, so we can ensure there’s some order,” she said.

Residents from Carrot River and the R.M. of Moose Range can pick up car passes from the town office starting June 2. Blaber said car passes will be available for out-of-town residents later.
