Melfort Salvation Army Store to reopen on Monday

Jun 1, 2020 | 12:38 PM

The Melfort Salvation Army store will reopen to the public on June 8.

The store closed its doors back in March as public health guidelines due to the COVID-19 pandemic came into effect.

Captain Rick Robins said it will be a staggered opening for the thrift store in the first week.

“It will not be open every single day during the first week,” Robins said. “Our store will be open on June 8, 10, and 12, so next Monday, Wednesday and Friday.”

The store will then be open Monday to Friday the following week for two weeks.

“Hopefully by week four we can open up on Saturday but that will depend on some of the health rules and regulations,” Robins said. “It is still a very fluid situation at this point and things can always change abruptly.”

The donation drop-off will be open this Wednesday, June 3 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on Friday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“When we do open drop-off, please do not bring it all at once. We hope that the amount of people dropping off will be staggered as well,” Robins said. “We cannot accept everything all at once.”

Robins recommends that if there are any larger loads of donations to give them a call first to see if the drop-off area has space for it or not.

“We do need to leave things for 72 hours prior to it being sorted and put out so if everyone can respect that, it would help us greatly at this time,” Robins said. “I know there are people sitting with garages full of donations just waiting to come in.”

There will be only 15 customers allowed in the store at one time and there will also be directional arrows on the floor as well.

The coffee area at the store will be closed to the public at this time and of course social distancing is recommended for everyone according to Robins.

“When you come in, the store will look like a new place,” Robins said.

The store underwent some major renovations. The clothing area is quite different now and is located where housewares used to be.

The stores in Tisdale and Nipawin will be closed for another couple of weeks at the very least. Within the province, only the Moose Jaw and Assiniboia Salvation Army locations have reopened. Melfort will be the third to open.

Community services has always been open during the course of the COVID-19 pandemic and will remain open to anyone who may be seeking help or meals.

“The staff is very excited and we can’t wait to see everyone when we open the doors on June 8,” he said.
