Miller Market and Food Gallery opens doors on Main Street in Melfort

Miller Market and Food Gallery is the latest addition to downtown Melfort.

The shop opened its doors to the public last Friday offering products from different local suppliers.

Owner and operator Tamara Miller said staff were a little hesitant to go through with opening during a pandemic but they could come up with more pros than cons.

“We know that some people are unable to work and finances may be tight but what we thought was more important was giving the community access to local food,” Miller said. “This way they know where their food comes from and they don’t have to worry about it coming from another country where they don’t know what’s going on.”

Miller added it also shows people what they have available right in their own town and surrounding area.

Suppliers that currently have stock inside of Miller’s Market are Sweetcheeks Organic Cotton Candy, Triple H Homestead from Hudson Bay, Oma’s Kitchen, Bison Ridge Farms in Prince Albert, Star City Meats, Beautiful Pollinators, Sunnyside Creamery, Living Skies Farms, Prairie Apothecary, Natural Plantation, and more.

“The producers are out there and they are working so hard to sell their products so we wanted to take off that burden a little bit,” Miller said. “We do the selling and they do what they do best.”

Miller also offers a daily coffee and dessert special at the shop for $5.

“We brew Prairie Bean coffee which is out of Outlook. It is excellent coffee and freshly roasted before we get it,” Miller said.

Miller said more suppliers will be added over time and fresh produce will also be added as the growing season goes on. Asparagus and rhubarb are currently in stock and available.

The first week in business has been steady so far for Miller.

“We do have signage coming later this week and so word hs gotten out pretty well and we really, really appreciate the customers that have come and supported us,” Miller said.

Any local producers wanting to get their supplies in store can contact Miller as well.

Future plans for the shop, once restrictions are lifted include offering workshops from the local suppliers.

“Our producers are very knowledgeable and have more than just their products to offer so we are hoping to give them that opportunity as well,” Miller said.
