Torch Trail Bible Camp introduces ‘Camp in a Bag’ during COVID-19 pandemic

They can’t fit campfires, horses, marshmallows, or a swimming hole in a bag, but organizers with Torch Trail Bible Camp intend to send a piece of summer camp to their campers.

‘Camp in a Bag’ was created in May after the camp had to cancel its 2020 summer season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The drawstring bag contains a T-shirt, water bottle, crafts, a snack, teaching material, and family activities.

“It’s definitely a tough decision to make,” Torch Trail Bible Camp’s Ministry Director Jennifer Enns said. “We still wanted to connect with the distant communities [and] the campers who come regularly to Torch Trail. Camp in a Bag was at least something we could do to keep people connected to the camp.”

Normally at this time, the camp would have its staff – including wranglers, cooks, and lifeguards – get the campsite ready for up to 300 children throughout the summer camp season. Now it’s about deciding how to deliver the personal connections to the camp at home.

Enns said they’re adding camp food recipes along with chapel videos to their website.

So far, 40 families have registered for Camp in a Bag.

“We’ll have different drop off points in Tisdale, Melfort, Nipawin, and Prince Albert,” Enns said. “We’ll be in communication with the parent or guardian regarding that and they’ll be picking up the bag at that point.”

Registration for Camp in a Bag lasts until the end of June. Enns said the bags will be ready by the end of July.
