Melfort Dynasty Theatres opening for popcorn sales this weekend

Jun 19, 2020 | 12:53 PM

While the big screen won’t be lighting up just yet, Dynasty Theatres Melfort will open its concession for those wanting movie theatre popcorn to take home.

The theatre, like many other businesses, were forced to shut their doors to the public in the middle of March when the COVID-19 pandemic hit Saskatchewan.

Owner and operator Corinne Pereyma said they will be open for popcorn sales Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. beginning this evening.

“We have been gone so long, we have missed the people of the community, and people have been so awesome and concerned when we would be back,” Pereyma said.

The idea for opening the concession again came from a community member who made a Facebook post voicing concern about the theatre. The community got behind the post with 500 shares and comments supporting the idea.

“We decided we would give a try anyways and would just do Friday and Saturday to begin with and maybe add an afternoon at some point too but we will have details on that later,” Pereyma said.

Movie theatres are in stage two of phase four of the re-open Saskatchewan plan which has no date as of yet.

Pereyma said when they do get to open again, there will be some restrictions in place.

“It will probably be half capacity and we would want people to come five minutes earlier and people would be seated in every other row, only families together and things like that,” Pereyma said.

There are still many other unknowns including movie releases that were pushed back by film companies such as Mulan that was set to come out at the end of March.

“Many movies have been put back to the end of July and could end up being pushed back more, we just don’t know yet,” Pereyma said.

In the meantime, Pereyma is hopeful the popcorn sales will go over well and is thrilled to see some friendly faces this weekend.

“We appreciate the support from the community of Melfort and just want to thank them so much,” Pereyma said.
