Nipawin LP Miller grads to be honoured with parade

Jun 22, 2020 | 11:00 AM

Residents of Nipawin have a chance to salute this year’s graduating class.

The Nipawin LP Miller Comprehensive Grad Parade will take place Monday, June 29 at noon.

Organizer Susan Westgard told northeastNOW a parent committee got together to make the parade a reality.

The parade is hosted by the Nipawin Exhibition Association, who is covering the insurance of the event. The exhibition and parade were cancelled in Nipawin this year due to COVID-19.

Westgard said the grad parade will be an extended route from the usual exhibition parade.

“The Pineland Co-op has graciously offered us to meet at their parking lot behind their C-store, so [the parade] is going to start at Pineland Co-op. It’s going to go up to 9th Ave. and turn right and go up past the hospital and then it’s the regular parade route,” Westgard said.

From the hospital, the parade will go up to Fas Gas then turn past Centennial Arena and will end just Central Park School, where Westgard said many of the students started their schooling.

Grads will be in vehicles, or on the back of a truck or a trailer, which can be decorated if they so wish.

“[The grads] will be all dressed up in their grad dresses that were purchased pre-COVID-19, and their suits,” Westgard said. “It’s just to celebrate this important milestone for these graduates.”

The school is giving the students a virtual grad, and Westgard said the parent committee thought it would be a good idea to do a parade, which would replace the graduate procession that usually happens before the ceremonies.

Westgard said the committee sends special thanks to the Nipawin Exhibition Association, Pineland Co-op, the RCMP members will be directing traffic at Centre St., the Nipawin Fire Department, and the Town of Nipawin.

Spectators are being asked to observe social distancing while taking in the parade.
