Safe Communities Humboldt & Area launches positive ticketing campaign

Jun 23, 2020 | 8:00 AM

The 2020 Positive Ticketing Campaign is underway in Humboldt.

The Safe Communities Humboldt & Area campaign rewards citizens who are choosing and encouraging safe behaviours like using protective gear while skateboarding and cycling, or simply crossing the street at marked crosswalks.

“We want to recognize those individuals that are choosing safe behaviours as we do start to re-open activities here for the spring and summer, and award them with a positive ticket and a prize,” Executive Director Shari Hinz told northeastNOW.

In any other year, Humboldt RCMP, Fire, and Ambulance Service members would hand out the positive tickets in the community. Hinz said with the COVID-19 pandemic that’s not possible, so they are taking a different approach this year.

“Rather than have our emergency services go out and award tickets, just because we all need to practice safe social distancing, we are encouraging individuals to nominate themselves or nominate others that are choosing those safe behaviours,” Hinz said.

The organization wanted to continue to maintain that messaging of safety, Hinz said, and encourage people to model safe behaviour as it motivates others to do the same.

Hinz said positive ticketing works.

“We’ve had some really good response when we’ve [run] the campaign over the past number of years,” Hinz said.

Safe Communities Humboldt & Area will give those chosen for their safe behaviour a positive ticket, and prizes including leisure and mini-golf passes, a fleece blanket, foldable water bottle with a treat coupon, pop sockets, food and treat coupons, or sunglasses.

SGI and SaskTel have helped sponsor the program, while SaskTel, the Humboldt & District Chamber of Commerce and local businesses including the Humboldt Co-op, McDonald’s, the City of Humboldt and Safe Communities Humboldt & Area will supply the items.

The program started on Monday and runs through Oct. 23. At the end of October there will be a grand prize draw, from all redeemed ticket entries.
