Melfort Multi-K participating in Virtual run/walk on Canada Day

The Melfort Multi-K committee is encouraging residents to get out and active on Canada Day.

In partnership with the Queen City Marathon and the Provincial Capital Commission, a free run, walk, or roll is being offered on July 1 across Saskatchewan.

Race Director Allison Rogers said registration is online at race roster or follow the link at melfortmulitk.ca

“Just pick an event or distance, you can run, walk or roll if you are in a wheelchair or if you want to bike,” Rogers said. “Just any way to be active and keep the running community active.”

The goal is to get 500 participants involved around the province, there are 380 registered as of June 29.

Rogers said many running events were cancelled for this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic so it seemed like a great idea to get on board with the virtual run.

“We just wanted to get those race groups to rally together and give that opportunity to people on Canada Day,” Rogers said.

The Queen City committee is keeping track of participants and the kilometres throughout the province.

The City of Melfort is doing a quilt parade on July 1 as well which could be worked into a walking route.

“Get the map off of the city website and you can walk and clock the kilometres while checking out the quilts,” Rogers said.

All routes can be shared on social media and participant are asked to use the hashtag #SKMovesOnCanadaDay.

The Melfort Multi-K typically held in September has also been cancelled for this year and the 10th annual event will be held in 2021.

However, there will be the Melfort Multi-K 9.5 which will also be a virtual event during the week leading up to Sept. 19.

“There will be a certificate on our website that you can download, take a picture, post it on social media and let us know what you have done,” Rogers said.

Registration will not be required for that but Rogers hopes it will serve as some motivation for runners to keep working towards a goal.

“Even though times may be crazy and different right now we can still keep moving and that is what’s important to remember,” Rogers said.
