Local bowling alleys ready to re-opening

Jul 6, 2020 | 3:54 PM

Local bowling alleys are eagerly anticipating their return to business.

Indoor recreation facilities, like bowling alleys and indoor skating rinks, are allowed to reopen as of Monday, July 6, as per Saskatchewan’s plan to restart the economy in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tisdale Bowling Lanes planned to open Monday. The owner, Li Ma, told northeastNOW through his daughter who was translating for him, that it’s exciting to be able to re-open again after being closed since the middle of March.

“[We] want our customers to have fun, while being safe and healthy,” he said.

There are also numerous precautions in place to keep everyone safe. Plexiglass barriers will be up at the front desk to protect employees, and items like shoes, tables, chairs, and bathrooms will be sanitized after each use. Ma said they’re also doing something different with the bowling balls. The balls will be sorted by colour and customers will be asked to choose their own colour to make sure that contact is limited.

As for how many bowlers will be allowed at this time, only four of the facility’s eight lanes will open to start, meaning 24 bowlers will be allowed in at one time.

Tisdale Bowling Lanes will be open 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday for walk-in bowlers, while people can message, or call in reservations for the remaining days.

Meanwhile, Nipawin Bowl is hoping to open its doors sometime this week according to owner Lloyd Foy. He said there are still some things to sort out including how many people he’ll be allowed to have in his bowling alley. Foy said they’ll have to be vigilant when it comes to cleaning.

“We’ll have to do a lot more cleaning,” he said. “And we have to do it more often now for sure.”

Foy said for the time being, reserving a lane would be the best way to guarantee play in the future.

Melfort Bowl is now open for business according to Owner Rick Lang.

He told northeastNOW the alley will run at one-third capacity for the time being and it will only be by appointment.

Meanwhile, Kemway Lanes in Humboldt announced on Facebook they would be opening on Tuesday, July 7. Hours will be 1:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m daily and they will be doing extra cleaning as per the provincial guidelines.
