Town of Nipawin reminding residents to keep property clean

Property owners in Nipawin are being urged to continue to keep the community looking tidy.

Residents are reminded they are required to ensure their yards are clean, as part of the Property Maintenance and Standards Bylaw.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Barry Elliott told northeastNOW council and the community as a whole take a great deal of pride in Nipawin, and they’re issuing a gentle reminder the bylaw is in place.

“We’re asking people just to be mindful of the appearance of their yards, and try and stay on top of it,” Elliott said. “We know that so many in the community already do an exemplary job of that, so we’re hopeful this will just encourage those few that are challenged to do that to take another look at it.”

Elliott said the town has issues periodically with yards, and some are a little more unkempt than others. Follow-ups by the town usually reveal a reason for the untidy yards, according to the CAO. That could include the property owner being away on holidays, or it simply being too wet to mow.

“We just want to work with them to encourage compliance and help to keep our town as beautiful as it is,” Elliott said.

The town’s bylaw officer will follow up on any concerns people have about unkempt yards. Elliott said they try first to educate the property owner about the importance of complying with the bylaw, and maintaining a line of communication. Enforcing the bylaw through the levying of fines is a last resort, Elliott added.

“We’re thankful to our local residents for the work they’re doing on keeping our community looking beautiful,” Elliott said.
