Carrot River hosting first Street Hockey Classic

Jul 18, 2020 | 12:35 PM

As provincial, western, and national tournaments are on hiatus amidst the coronavirus pandemic, the Town of Carrot River hopes to welcome in some of Saskatchewan’s avid ball hockey players.

While it technically isn’t a tournament due to the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s guidelines regarding non-contact sports, the first Carrot River Street Hockey Class is expected to encourage competitive play.

The idea was pushed forward with assistance from Brennan Hall, the Town of Carrot River’s program assistant who has years of experience in the Saskatchewan Ball Hockey League.

“Everyone has been locked up for the last half of winter and most of spring, so we thought this would be a good way to kick off things going back to normal here,” Hall said. “Being [in Carrot River] and not having that opportunity to continue with the provincial organization, I thought this would be a cool event to run. We’re hoping maybe this appeals to players and gives them more time to play and competition.”

The Carrot River Street Hockey Classic will feature divisions for every age level – men and women – but the final numbers are still to be determined with registration ongoing. Teams consist of nine players (eight runners and one goaltender) and divisions are expected to hold a maximum of 60 players. If a division receives 100 entries, for example, Hall said there would be two divisions of 50 players maximum.

Regarding extra precautions, Hall said he’s taking ideas from a ball hockey league in Saskatoon that’s resumed play, which includes players arriving to their games already in gear and not being allowed to use dressing rooms.

The Carrot River Street Hockey Classic is expected to run from Aug. 28 to 30. Early bird registration concludes on Aug. 1.
