Melfort Arts Council recruiting new volunteers

Aug 10, 2020 | 3:14 PM

The Melfort Arts Council is currently rejuvenating and looking to grow its memberships and recruiting volunteers.

Chair of the visual arts committee Brenda Mellon said volunteers do not need to consider themselves artists.

“People who may be interested in helping to set up some of the visual shows, help determined what performances are brought into the community and to assist us with other community art events,” Mellon said.

Individuals can contribute as little or as much time as they are able to.

“Directors on the board would require more time but those wanting to just assist on certain projects we need those volunteers involved as well,” Mellon said.

There will be some regular monthly meetings to begin with to ensure committees and structure are in place before fundraising is underway.

The Melfort Arts Council consists of two different committees.

The visual arts side includes touring art shows that travel throughout the province, and the performing arts brings in different entertainers and performances.

“This is where we are looking for people who have a passion on the performing side and have an interest in helping us determine what would be best for the area of Melfort,” Mellon said.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, some programming is on hold for the arts council with the cancellation of its last visual arts show at the Kerry Vickar Centre (KVC).

A show at the KVC gallery set for September will be set-up at the end of August.

A meeting for those interested in getting involved with the arts council is currently slated for Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. but those wishing to attend should get signed up beforehand.

“We’d really to get some new community members join us and to help us set a new path for the performing and visual arts in our community,” Mellon said.

Mellon added volunteering with the arts council is a great way to gain experience, meet new people, and learn something new.

Anyone that may be interested is asked to call Mellon at 306-921-6749 or Joanne Bolen at 306-921-8287.
