‘Glowing reviews’ for The Amazing Race Melfort

An amazing success for the first ever Amazing Race Melfort.

The race took place on Saturday, August 15 and saw 11 teams of four take on Melfort and explore the city. Teams had to complete various challenges throughout the afternoon.

“We’re definitely calling the ‘Amazing Race Melfort’ a success for this year,” said Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall. “We had really good response from all of the participants, and so we’re really excited that it went over so well.”

Teams explored all corners of Melfort and visited some of the city’s most known spots. The race began with all teams taking off from the Kerry Vickar Centre and heading to their first challenge.

The tasks included measuring the base of rotary hill at Rotary Park, sifting through spaghetti to find a key to open the correct mailbox at the Historic Post Office, filling a container with water or sand at Melfort Creek Playground, flipping a tortilla on their heads at Sunset Crescent, setting a table perfectly for a supper with the queen at the Northern Lights Palace, and some team members were even tasked with finishing a venti Frappuccino from Koffee Grounds in under five minutes. All had to be done while following COVID-19 guidelines set out by the province, which Marshall thinks was done very well.

Marshall said the competition was exciting and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The northeastNOW news team also competed in the event with Mat Barrett, Angie Rolheiser, Aaron Schulze, and Alice McFarlane.

It wasn’t just teams with people from Melfort either as Team Pretty in Pink had members from Prince Albert, Birch Hills, and Saskatoon.

Ultimately, it was Team South that finished the race first and got to donate the $220 worth of entry fees to the group or charity of their choice, which was the Treehouse that is part of North East Outreach and Support Services.

Marshall said with the extreme success of the first ‘Amazing Race Melfort”, they hope it’s not the last time it takes place.

“It went over so well this year and everyone’s reviews were really good, glowing reviews over the amazing race,” she said. “So we think we’re going to be able to make it an annual community event. Hopefully, depending on what COVID-19 is like next year, we can even make it bigger and better.”

Marshall also thanked the volunteers that helped set up the event and run it, the Community Ambassadors who have been involved with numerous activities in the city throughout the summer. The Melfort Fire Department also had a team in the event and helped cook a meal for the competitors after.
