A design has been selected for the back wall of the Liliidae Home and Design building in Melfort.

The public was asked to vote on which design they would like to see on the unsightly back wall of the business on Burrows Ave. W.

Owner Julie Schmale said they had 877 votes in the contest with Prairie Proud by Dean Armstrong receiving the most votes.

“We are very happy that his won, they were all great and we liked them all for different reasons,” Schmale said. “We are happy with this result though and it will start going up this fall.”

The other two top designs in the contest were Clean and Classy by Kelsey Kerr and Bold Lillies by Avery South.

Submissions for the contest were collected over a number of months and then the top three designs were determined by Schmale and staff.

“In the beginning, voting was very even between the three but over time Prairie Proud just took off and left the other two in the dust,” Schmale said.

Armstrong who is a teacher at Melfort and Unit Comprehensive Collegiate, submitted his design that included more of the landscape but his original being had more straight lines and house was in the middle. The Liliidae team made some edits to the original with the consent of Armstrong.

“He was very pleased and seemed very happy to take part in this,” Schmale said. “He does art and is an artist and is something that he obviously enjoys.”

The design unveiling took place on Saturday at Liliidae’s one-year anniversary celebration and market that saw a couple hundred people in attendance throughout the day.

Vendors including art by Christina Miller which can be purchased at Mel-City Florist, Four Season Greenhouse was selling jam, Glendenning Honey was on hand and more.

“It was a very nice selection of locally, handmade products which we got really good feedback on afterwards,” Schmale said.

Schmale said they hope to host the market on an annual basis and they are already planning for next year when they hope to bring in more vendors.

The Melfort area has welcomed and supported Schmale and she said that was very evident at the event on the weekend.

“We have only been here a year but we have been able to partner up with people in different projects and to see that many people come out on Saturday was really nice,” Schmale said.
