Aug 22, 2020 | 12:54 PM

There are separate tornado and severe thunderstorm watches is in effect for many areas in Saskatchewan’s north-central.

Environment Canada issued both watches just after 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Meadow Lake and Prince Albert region are currently under a tornado watch.

The cities of Lloydminster, Saskatoon, Melfort, Humboldt and North Battleford are included in the severe thunderstorm watch, along with towns such as Melfort, Wynyard, Wadena, Martensville, Warman, Nipawin, Unity and the surrounding regions.

Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that could produce damaging wind gusts, hail and heavy rain.

An upper disturbance is being tracked across central Saskatchewan, with thunderstorms having the potential to become severe.

“We actually have a set-up that is quite conducive to the development of supercells in the northern grain belt of Saskatchewan,” Environment Canada’s Shannon Moodie explained.

“There is a risk of tornados today. We’ll likely see watches being issued later today, this afternoon, that threat will last through the evening.”
