Another step in a new school coming to the Town of Lanigan.

It was announced on Monday, Aug. 24 the Horizon School Division has been approved to begin planning and design work for the new Kindergarten to Grade 12 school. Back in June, the provincial government announced funding for numerous projects across the province, including a new school in Lanigan.

Currently, Lanigan has two separate buildings for their elementary and high school aged children. Horizon School Division Director of Education Kevin Garinger said a new combine facility is a great opportunity for students and staff.

“Anytime you take an old facility, or old facilities in this case,” he said. “And you’re able to bring them together, it allows for a larger school, an opportunity to even do more in terms of efficiencies around supporting needs of learning.”

The current buildings are quite old according to Garinger, and it’s time for their students to be able to go into a new facility.

The next steps for the Horizon School Division include hiring a project manager, and getting into the nuts and bolts of planning the facility.

“We know that we’re going to want to have all kinds of options for practical and applied arts,” Garinger told northeastNOW. “Making sure we have a state of the art industrial arts lab and home economics lab, things like that which are important for all of our children.”

Garinger added having an appropriate gymnasium to accommodate 400-plus students is another key.

The two current schools will remain operational for the time being and construction on the new school is set to begin in the spring of 2021, according to a release. Garinger said they’re also still determining an exact location for the new school, with ideas around building on the same property as the current schools, or working with the town to find an alternative.

The expected $21.1 million project is expected to be done by 2023.
