Local charities to benefit from Tim Hortons smile cookie campaign

Sep 13, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The Tim Hortons smile cookie campaign gets underway across the country on Monday.

Each restaurant owner chooses a charity, hospital, or program to benefit from cookie sales each year.

The full $1 from the purchase of a smile cookie here in Melfort will be donated to the North Central Health Care Foundation.

“They have a lot of expenses with getting different equipment within the hospital,” Melfort Tims owner Shannon Sigfusson said. “They have decided to dedicate the funding from this campaign to a blanket warmer.”

With the Covid-19 pandemic this year, Sigfusson said it is more important than ever to support the healthcare system.

“That’s not only here in this area but in the province and country as well,” Sigfusson said.

Last year in Melfort, 3,948 cookies were sold and the team at Tims is hoping to exceed that during this year’s campaign.

Sigfusson said they have order forms on hand as well for those larger orders.

“In the last nine years that we have been running this campaign in Melfort, we have raised more than $35,000 that has gone to different charities in the Melfort and Tisdale area,” Sigfusson said.

The Tisdale location is participating for the third year and is putting support behind the North East Early Childhood Intervention program. Last year, $3,804 was donated to the North East ECIP.

The Humboldt location will also put their support behind healthcare with all proceeds going to the Humboldt District Hospital Foundation. Last year’s campaign brought in $11,023 for the foundation, exceeding the year prior to $8,593.

In Nipawin, funds are earmarked for Handiworks in the community.

Smile cookies will be sold at participating Tim Hortons locations across the country until Sept. 20.
