Pasquia Place welcoming back residents following storm damage repairs

More than two months have passed since a vicious storm damaged the Town of Carrot River, including Pasquia Place.

Residents were evacuated within three hours of the storm, as the assisted living facility lost nearly 2,000 square feet of its roof and suffered indoor damage.

After three months of living with family and friends, residents will be welcome back to their homes at Pasquia Place on Wednesday, Sept. 23.

“Our folks who are used to the routine here were unfortunately ripped from their family in a short period of time, because we have become a family here at Pasquia Place,” Manager April Wouters said. “Friends and families of our tenants came to their aid very quickly, but their homes are not designed to have seniors with special needs in them. People have had to rearrange travel, sleeping arrangements, all sorts of things, but they’ve done so willingly without hesitation. The ones who are coming back are relieved to be back home and I think it’ll be a positive thing for everybody.”

Insurance will cover the damages, but that hasn’t stopped some Carrot River residents from donating money, goods, or fundraising to improve the quality of life at Pasquia Place during the storm damage repairs. Wouters calls the community support humbling.

“Even prior to our opening, our community has been behind us 100 per cent and that didn’t change after the storm on July 2. Our community is wonderful,” she said.

Before residents move back on Sept. 23, the board of directors will meet to decide what visitor restrictions will be placed amidst the coronavirus pandemic, as Pasquia Place only allowed visitors for one week prior to the storm. Wouters suspects restrictions such as limited visiting hours, two visitors per tenant at one time, face masks, and hand washing will be implemented once more.
