Greenwater Lake Provincial Park set to get paving facelift

The Government of Saskatchewan announced on Thursday, Sept. 17 that over 100 kilometres of roads in and around provincial parks would be paved in 2021.

It’s all part of the government’s two-year, $7.5 billion capital plan to stimulate the economy post-COVID-19.

One of the provincial parks that will be getting a bit of a facelift is Greenwater Lake Provincial Park. Byron Davis is the Executive Director of the Infrastructure and Capital Planning department of the Ministry of Parks, Culture, and Sport. He said normally roads in those parks get beaten up through weather, runoff, and other factors.

“We do periodic upgrades to roads within the park,” Davis told northeastNOW. “But this additional funding will go a long way to extending the life of some of the important core area roads in Greenwater Park.”

Davis said they are excited to see the funding coming for the roads. He said there are a number of ways they could pave the roads, and at Greenwater, the plan is to do an asphalt overlay of sorts.

He added these updated roads will be a welcome site for visitors.

“These upgrades are really important to our visitors and provide better surfaces for them to travel with their recreational vehicles,” Davis said. “And the highway improvements leading to parks are very important to our visitors.”

On top of Greenwater Provincial Park getting upgrades, a few highways heading into other provincial parks will get paved as well. Highway 255 near Tobin Lake, and Highway 265 near Candle Lake Provincial Park will get facelifts.

Davis said the tendering will begin soon for the projects and will be done in 2021.
