Names are starting to trickle in for candidates in the upcoming municipal election in November.

Former Melfort broadcaster Cam Lee has decided to throw his hat into the ring to become a councillor for the City of Melfort.

“I’ve always had an interest in politics,” he said. “I’ve got a little time now, so I thought I’d see what I can do.”

Lee, originally from Melfort has spent most of his life in the city, including the last 18 years where he worked in the newsroom of Melfort’s local radio station. For the last 15, he was news director. Lee attended numerous council meetings in his time in the newsroom and said he’s been able to see and hear a lot about Melfort.

“Being in the newsroom, you kind of get a sense of what the city is like,” Lee told northeastNOW. “Some of the needs, some of the wants, some of the complaints, and some of the good things about Melfort.”

Lee highlighted the Spruce Haven Park development, the Kerry Vickar Centre, the Northern Lights Palace, and the local walking trails as positive of Melfort. He said sometimes the negative is focused on too much, but there’s a lot to like and do in Melfort.

Living in the city for over 36 years, Lee said he’s got a good grasp of the city as a whole.

“I think just having been here, I kind of get a sense of what Melfort has been and what it could be,” he said.

Some of the things on the top of Lee’s list of issues include the continuous issue of infrastructure in the city, namely water line replacement. He said continuing to lobby the provincial and federal governments for funding is a priority. Attracting and keeping businesses in Melfort, as well as the recovery from COVID-19 are other important topics to Lee.

Lee added he knows it takes a team effort to run a city council.

“You can always have different opinions,” he said. “But as long as you’re rowing in the same direction, that’s the main thing.”

As for Lee’s campaign, he said he won’t be out door knocking due to COVID-19, saying he’s comfortable doing so, but there would be some residents who wouldn’t be OK with it. Lee has also made a Facebook page, and Twitter account for his campaign. He said he can always be reached via cellphone as well at 306-921-9521. Lee said he would love to hear from residents about their concerns, and what they like about Melfort.

Voters head to the polls on Nov. 9.

Editor’s Note: Lee was previously the news director of northeastNOW, a division of the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group.
