Former Melfort resident, Carla Streeton to be NDP candidate for Martensville-Warman

A former Melfort resident has been nominated by the Saskatchewan NDP to be the candidate for Martensville-Warman in the upcoming provincial election.

Carla Streeton is a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten teacher in Warman and wants to be the voice for Saskatchewan educators.

“I believe that investing in education is one of the greatest things we can do. Kids have suffered enough cuts in our schools,” Streeton said. “We need to start investing in our kids and investing in their future.”

The devastating cuts in schools that Streeton cited were public health nurses, teacher librarians in many schools, EA supports, SLP supports, mental health supports, and occupational therapy.

“We need government that listens to teachers, parents, and grandparents,” Streeton said.

Streeton has been teaching in Warman for six years, and has also taught in Allan and Nipawin. She also did her internship internationally giving her a sense of many different views and walks of life.

The now mother of three was raised by her mother who was a public health nurse and father who was a former elementary school principal in Melfort.

The decision to run was made by Streeton on August 6, when the return to school plan was announced by Gordon Wyant.

“My jaw dropped, collectively across the province I think many people’s jaw dropped,” Streeton said. “There was zero investment in schools, zero money to help us fight this pandemic when we are already clawing by.”

Politics has always been a subject of interest for Streeton and she considers herself a ‘political junkie.’

“I never pictured myself running especially during a pandemic but sometimes when the opportunity presents itself, you just step up,” Streeton said.

According to Streeton, this is just another way that she is doing the Saskatchewan thing and that is to support one another.

“I consider what I’m doing right now and what many are doing right now with speaking out, writing their MLA’s, being vocal about what they want changed, it’s part of who we are in Saskatchewan,” Streeton said.

As for the campaign process during a pandemic, Streeton said it is a learning curve for everyone in these unprecedented times.

“We are all in unique circumstances when it comes to comfort level, level of health, so it’s learning how to gauge with how to move forward,” Streeton said.

She said some candidates will choose to go door-knocking while some will move forward in their campaign in other ways.

“I want to encourage voters to look at education and the party’s platforms for education,” Streeton said. “Consider what sort of future we want to have in Saskatchewan and that starts with a well-funded and well-supported education system.”

Streeton is one of 10 teachers in the province that is in the running in the provincial election.

The Saskatchewan general election will be held on Oct. 26.
