The Rotary Club of Melfort honoured one of their own on Tuesday, Sept. 29 with a tree planting ceremony at Rotary Park.

Gordon Liddle passed away on Sept. 30, 2019 and was an active Rotarian, and active community member. Current President Mona Graham said the idea to plant a tree from the District Governor. Graham said Liddle was the epitome of what being a Rotarian means.

“Our motto is ‘Service Above Self,'” she said. “And Gordon exemplified that, he lived his life by that, and if all Rotarians were like him, we would accomplish so much more.”

A number of people were in attendance at the ceremony to honour Liddle. Mayor Rick Lang spoke on behalf of the city and said Liddle was a perfect citizen and always made sure the city was looking nice. Liddle was also Melfort’s Citizen of the Year at one point.

Liddle’s daughter was also there and said her father would be honoured.

Graham said now that the tree has been planted she hopes those who see it can learn something and think of Liddle.

“I hope those who know him will take away that this represents who Gordon was,” she said. “His love of nature, and the park.”

Graham added that Liddle almost always had a smile on his face, and even if he didn’t agree with a decision at times, he would still be right there to help out.

“It would be nice if we could all live our life like Gordon lived his life,” Graham told northeastNOW. “A true community person.”
