Municipal Election 2020

Former chamber president Marlon Zacharias entering Nipawin mayoral race

Following a four-year stint on the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce’s board – including two as president – Marlon Zacharias wants to serve the town in a different way.

The owner of Aerus; Nipawin and Area will run to become the town’s mayor in the 2020 Saskatchewan municipal elections.

Zacharias said his two main priorities is to create a stronger environment for Nipawin’s business community – commercial, industrial, and retail – and make it easier for young families to own homes in his community.

“A big part of our younger generation is not being able to afford to live out on their own, and have their own property and home,” Zacharias said. “I think our council can work towards that with very strong policy. I want to see the community grow in all aspects, business and residential, I want to see everybody coming into our community and making it the hot spot of the province, and I believe it is.

“We all know, especially given the [Vanity Cup] and with tourism being what it is, I want to develop our tourism industry into a stronger partner in the economic development within Nipawin.”

Zacharias said his preferred method to hear residents’ thoughts and concerns is face-to-face interaction but understands a lot of people wouldn’t want someone to campaign door-to-door amidst the coronavirus pandemic. He intends to get in touch with as many residents as possible via telephone and social media.

Along with Zacharias, Nipawin Mayor Rennie Harper announced her bid for re-election in the town’s mayoral race. Saskatchewan’s 2020 municipal elections take place on Monday, Nov. 9.
