Melfort Donor’s Choice returns on a virtual basis

Oct 2, 2020 | 11:50 AM

October means the month of giving with Melfort and District Donors Choice now underway.

Chairperson Russ Floyd told northeastNOW the campaign began with door-to-door canvassing, and then over the last number of years, groups involved have set-up in the mall.

Just like many other things, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced the campaign to go virtual.

“This year, our two weeks in the mall won’t happen which is too bad but will go forward and allow donations to one or all of the 16 groups we are made up of,” Floyd said.

Donations can be made by cheque, e-Transfer or at the Advantage Credit Union in Melfort.

The organizations involved are the Arthritis Society, Canadian Diabetes Society, Canadian Red Cross Society, Early Childhood Intervention, Northeast Special Needs Society, Lupus Saskatchewan Society Inc., Melfort Food Bank, Melfort Group Home Society, Number 117 Melfort Phoenix Royal Canadian Air Cadets, Melfort Public Library, Multiple Sclerosis Society, North Central Health Care Foundation, North East Outreach and Support Services, North East SPCA, Operation Fill-A-Backpack, PLUS Industries, and Special Olympics.

“Forms will be available online or paper copies can be picked-up at PLUS Industries if you didn’t get one in the mail,” Floyd said.

In discussions with the participating organizations, Floyd said donations are down this year.

“Now is a chance to perk them up a bit and it’s just a one shot thing happening in October,” Floyd said.

The campaign runs until Oct. 31.

“I was looking back over a lot of years and you can see that it is all dependent on how farming was going that fall as to how Donor’s Choice was going to do,” Floyd said. “This year, things look pretty good with the exception of hail to some areas.”

Floyd said the campaign is also counting on rural customers to help with getting these organizations over this hurdle.

Donor’s Choice is always looking for new people to add to their board so anyone with an organization that would like to join are welcomed each spring.
