Melfort Election

Local senior Crown prosecutor looking for seat on Melfort city council

Oct 5, 2020 | 5:11 PM

Candidates continue announce their bids for the upcoming municipal election.

In Melfort, Wade Rogers has announced his bid for a seat on Melfort city council. Rogers has lived in the city since 2013 and is currently employed with the Ministry of Justice as a senior Crown prosecutor. He said his day job sees him negotiate on a daily basis; a skill he believes will help in being a member of council.

“I think I have some skills that could be of assistance to the citizens of Melfort,” Rogers told northeastNOW.

Outside of his job, Rogers previously served with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1990 to 1993, and then again from 2015 to now as a member of the Cadet Instructor Cadre. He’s served as an officer with the 171 Melfort Phoenix Squadron which helps develop youth in the community.

Rogers said being part of a team will also help to hopefully make him a good councillor.

“They need a strong city council that can negotiate effectively with other levels of government,” he said. “So that our city’s interests are heard.”

Water loss, and water lines are just some of the items he hopes to help lobby governments for if elected.

Rogers wants voters to know he supports a two-year freeze on property taxes in Melfort. He said during the uncertain time of the COVID-19 pandemic, they can’t “overburden” the citizens with taxes. Rogers added he thinks taxes are too high for a city the size of Melfort.

Another topic on Rogers list is to help make it easier for businesses to come to Melfort and succeed. He said he’s heard from some businesses that believe zoning bylaws, and other regulations are too cumbersome for them to be feasible.

“Because I think over the next two years, what you’re going to see is, you’re going to see a lot of businesses that simply will cease to exist,” Rogers said. “But the ones that are viable are going to be looking for communities that are favourable to them and can make them viable and profitable.”

Rogers said he loves Melfort and believes it is a hidden gem in Saskatchewan.

“It’s nice that people want to ‘Play Melfort,'” he said. “But I want people to ‘Stay Melfort’, and I want them to stay here and I want them to fall in love with the city the way I have.”

Voters head to the polls Nov. 9.
