The number of women running for city council in Humboldt is growing.

Office Manager at Prairie Diesel Tawnie Johnson said her 13 years in the community and an interest in politics led to her decision to run for a seat on council.

“I just really want to see everything continue to grow, I want to put back into it because I feel like Humboldt has given me so much,” Johnson said.

Johnson said she wants to put her focus on small businesses and youth programming. She is currently involved with Little Lizzy’s Intergenerational Daycare Board and the Public School Student Community Council.

Johnson was born in Saskatchewan, raised in Alberta and ended up in Humboldt after graduation and fell in love with the community.

“Thought it was a good place for families, I like the amenities, the sense of community is really strong here and that is something that is important to me,” Johnson said.

While volunteering and being part of the community is important, Johnson wants to put her focus on small businesses and youth programming.

“It’s about living where you are, making sure you are consuming the things that are here and making sure that you are shopping here,” Johnson said.

The decision to run came to Johnson when she realized that her voice is one that matters.

“I just turned 31 so I felt like I finally deserve a voice,” Johnson said. “Councillor Sandy Weyland was part of a local article and she mentioned that more females should be involved in council and I decided that this is something that I would love to do.”

Weyland announced over the summer that she would not seek another term on city council after serving two terms and has retirement on her mind.

So far there are three other women in the running for a spot on Humboldt council. Further details on those candidates will be posted on our municipal election page.

Johnson plans to do some socially distant door-knocking in the coming weeks ahead of the Nov. 9 municipal election.
