Candidate lists unveiled for Melfort, Nipawin, Tisdale, Humboldt, and Carrot River

Municipalities in Northeast Saskatchewan have released their lists of candidates for the 2020 municipal and school boards election.

Melfort

The City of Melfort will see a two-horse mayoral race.

Rick Lang is seeking his third term as mayor, while Councillor Glenn George looks to unseat him. Lang has 18 years on council, while George has 11.

There is a total of 10 candidates for the six other council seats in 2020, five of which are looking to return to the council chambers.

The returnees include Darryl Benson, Tim Hoenmans, April Phillips, Doug Terry, and Trent Mitchell. With George seeking the mayoral seat, there will be at least one new councillor.

Tara Muntain, Cam Lee, Wade Rogers, Brian Enge, and Don Signori are all looking to join council.

Nipawin

In Nipawin, three candidates are vying to become the town’s mayor.

Incumbent candidate Rennie Harper looks to win a second term as Nipawin’s mayor, with Brian Starkell and Marlon Zacharias as the challengers.

For council, there are 10 candidates battling for six spots. All incumbent councillors – Jan Boughen, Sheldon Chornawka, Kerry Skowronski, Gene Rusk, Geoff Stewart, and Joyce Watts – are seeking re-election.

The challengers are John Dempster, Bruce Pihowich, Sheila Seiferling, and Stacey Vik.

Tisdale

The Town of Tisdale already knows who its mayor will be for the next four years.

Al Jellicoe won by acclimation on Wednesday, Oct. 7, after the nomination deadline had passed and no other candidates were named for the position. It will be Jellicoe’s third term as mayor after first being elected in 2012.

The six council chairs are where things get interesting in Tisdale.

Only two councillors are looking to return to the chambers after earning seats in 2016. Brendan Samida, and Mike Hill are familiar names on the ballot, while six new candidates are looking to earn votes.

Marilyn Baker, Kurt Johnson, Adam Lewis, Amanda Reynolds, Howard Saelhof, and Evan Sisson are the new candidates in the race for council.

Humboldt

After one term as mayor, Rob Muench is leaving the mayoral seat open for 2020 in the City of Humboldt.

Micheal Behiel, Harley Bentley, and Lorne Pratchler are in the running for mayor.

Muench, however, is bidding for a council seat. Larry Jorgenson and Roger Nordick are the only two incumbent councillors seeking re-election.

Newcomers Michaela Fetter, Kelly Herperger, Phillip Hinz, Tawnie Johnson, Amanda Klitch, Roger Korte, Darcy Leonew, Megan MacInnis, David Rowe, Carrie Ann Schemenauer-Hradecki, and Caitlin Senko are also hoping for seats.

Carrot River

The Town of Carrot River has a four-way standoff for the mayoral seat.

Incumbent Ila Boehm seeks a full, four-year term as Carrot River’s mayor, after winning a byelection in May. The challengers are Brock Irvine, and Councillors Dennis Letendre, and Mike Livermore.

There are six council seats available. The other three incumbent councillors – Dylan Borody, Chad Trombley, and Neal Wasko – are seeking re-election. The challengers include Chris Borgon, Scott Debienne, Al Frecon, Carrie Neigel, and Sheldon Rempel.

The 2020 Saskatchewan municipal elections take place Monday, Nov. 9.
