The City of Melfort is teaming up with the local RCMP to curb crime in the city with the Community Safety Initiative.

Crime is reportedly on the rise in Melfort since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to a release from the City of Melfort on Thursday, Oct. 23. Specifically, the increase are to break and enters, theft and vehicle thefts. As a result the city will install some high visibility cameras in high traffic areas to help identify criminals, and reduce crime, including vandalism.

City Manager Ryan Danberg said just adding cameras won’t completely shut out the crime.

“We need everybody’s buy-in on this, so that obviously we can have this exit our community,” he said.

Danberg added the cameras are something they’re adding year over year as a part of their capital inventory.

In the release, the city also gave some tips for people. That includes locking up your valuables, and not leaving them in sight within your vehicle, not leaving house keys, ATV keys, or shed keys in your vehicles either. In addition to that, lock your home, sheds, and garages when not at home and at night. If you are the unfortunate victim of a break and enter or theft, report it, and report suspicious activity. The city also said it may also be a good idea to mark your possessions to identify them.

Danberg said they’ll continue working with the RCMP and its citizens.

“We’ll do as much communication on this as well as working with our local detachment as well,” Danberg said.
